Most girls only pretend to be mothers to their baby dolls, but for Jennifer Obregon, it was a passion. When she was four years old, she got a brand new baby doll and from that point, Jennifer knew that that was what she wanted to do with her life – to be a wife and a mother. Jennifer and her husband, Daniel, had two beautiful kids together and everything seemed perfect until breast cancer threatened to take her away from her dream of being a wife and mother.
Routine with her check-ups, Jennifer never received a bad report. In fact, her annual mammogram did not detect the lump in her breast – she did. Standing in the shower one evening, she felt a bump on one of her breasts. When she went back to the doctor to have it checked out, the doctor confirmed her fear. She had breast cancer.
After her diagnosis, Jennifer realized she had a choice to make. She had always wanted to be a wife and mother, and her husband and children were counting on her to fight through her diagnosis and treatment. With her family by her side and their faith in God, Jennifer found a strength in herself that she didn’t know that she had.
Jennifer didn’t let her cancer take over her life – she used her diagnosis to be of encouragement to those around her. Each day, Jennifer and Daniel wear breast cancer pins in honor of all those affected by breast cancer. “I was touched by breast cancer, so now I intend on reaching out to as many people as I can so that I can be of help to them,” Jennifer says.
Jennifer and her family participated in their very first Plano Race for the Cure last year. They loved getting to walk with a variety of people – women, men, children, survivors, and supporters. She reflects on her journey and how she decided to accept the challenge for not only herself but those in the future as well. She says, “I want to make an impact on the people who walk beside us – the survivors and their families, the ones who are fighting breast cancer, and the ones who will fight breast cancer. That is why I walk.”
